Wow! It is hard to believe but we have now had one hundred days of school. Yesterday, the lower school gathered to celebrate. Each child, grades Pre-K through 3, brought in a box filled with 100 items. The variety of items chosen was impressive and included 100 candies, 100 legos, 100 Q-tips, 100 lollipops, 100 stickers and 100 dog food pieces. The children shared their items in groups.
The children also had a visit with Hamorah Joanne’s 100 year old Great-Aunt Charlotte, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Hamorah Joanne and who talked a bit about life 100 years ago. Hamoreh Jeremy taught us that some Jewish people try to say 100 blessings each day. Later in the day, the students rotated through four stations centered around the number 100. These stations included making pictures with 100 pieces of paper, doing 100 exercises and building with 100 cups.
A wonderful time was had by all, including the teachers!
In other Chalav news, in math we have continued to learn about telling time to the hour and half hour. The children are working on reading an analog clock, writing and reading the time in numbers and knowing what is an hour or half-hour before or after any given time. They also are learning the difference between am and pm and have been practicing time telling by playing Time Telling Bingo. In addition, the children have been learning a rhyming poem to help them remember how many days in each month.
In Fundations, we have completed our focused study of blends although we will continue to review blends, as well as digraphs and glued sounds throughout the rest of the year. In addition, the children have been learning about “bossy r” also known as “controlled r.” Examples of words with bossy r include bird, car, her, burn and horn.
Chalav Writers have begun working on chapter books with a pattern. These focus on things that the children did over their February vacations. In reading, we have been practicing re-telling. Next week our focus will shift to poetry.
Best Wishes for a Peaceful Shabbat,
Hamorah Joanne
