Chalav students were busy this week working on their Kevin Henkes projects. Each Chalav student chose his/her favorite book by Kevin Henkes. The students then had to list the characters and setting of their favorite book, write why they like that book and make a text-to-self connection with that book. These ideas then became part of a poster that each child created around his/her chosen book.
As a class, we composed a letter to Mr. Henkes to let him know how much was have enjoyed reading his books and to wish him a happy birthday. His birthday is this coming week. We will be mailing the letter off to him along with copies of a picture of each child and his/her poster as seen below.
In math, Chalav students have been practicing counting to 100 by 5s. Ask your children to teach you how to play “Buzz.” We also have been learning about coins, specifically pennies, nickels and dimes. The children have been learning the value of each coin and we have begun practicing adding up different coin combinations.
In Fundations, we completed our unit on digraphs and have moved onto the next unit. We currently are learning about letters that want a “buddy” letter when at the end of a word containing a short vowel. Specifically the letter that need a buddy are f, l, s and sometimes z and examples of these words include: fall, buzz, cuff, mess.
During tefillah this week, we took a walk outside and prayed in nature’s sanctuary. We listened to a story about the power of words and letters did some aleph-bet yoga.
The children have earned a number of mission mitzvah coupons for good deeds in the classroom (showing kindness to each other or just working hard at difficult tasks). We hope to have a mission mitzvah party this coming Tuesday to celebrate. More information will be forthcoming.
