On Thursday, we attended a shofar workshop with Rav-Hazzan. He showed us his collection of shofarot, and the students had the opportunity to hold and blow many of them. The students really loved exploring and made impressively loud blasts.
During our first art class, we decorated a paper shofar and learned about different techniques we can use with water colors.
We planted a garden in our room! We have basil and parsley plants growing. Everyone had turns to scoop dirt into pots and water our plants, and we’ve added the job of Gardener to our classroom job board.
Students decorated paper apples and pomegranates to hang on our big tree.
Some students shared their Me Bags. Thank you for sending these in! We’ll continue to share these next week.
Rav Shira led the class in a session of Torah Play, in which she used visuals to relate thoughts about the concepts of time and the cycle of Jewish holidays. The students were given the opportunity to “wonder” about different aspects of the story.
We began our Weekend Review pages. At the beginning of each week, students will reflect upon their weekends and draw and write/dictate a few sentences about them. These pages will be stored in a folder and will be fun to view at the end of the school year.
Kindergarten students began their math and Fundations units. In Fundations, students learned the letters T, B, and F and their sounds. In math, students explored basic number skills and practiced writing the numbers 1 and 2. PreK students enjoyed making apple prints and mosaic Rosh Hashanah cards, practicing counting out and stringing beads, and playing a variety of games to enhance fine- and gross-motor skills.
We’ve read many books over the course of the week! Some of them have been Sammy Spider’s First Rosh Hashanah, by Sylvia Rouss; Bim and Bom: A Shabbat Tale, by Daniel J. Swartz; and special books about baseball and dinosaurs, brought in by students.
The students enjoyed their first Knucklebones class! Knucklebones is a special group that comes to our school on Tuesdays to do fun games and exercises with the kids.
The students are doing a wonderful job learning the routines of our classroom. They participate in reciting the blessings before snack and lunch in our classroom each day, they line up quietly and use walking feet in the halls, and they’ve been working on raising their hands to make a comment or ask a question. During Choice Time, they’ve been working together to build with Legos and Magnatiles, and they enjoy drawing and chatting together.
We wish you all a Shana Tovah u’Metukah (Happy and Sweet New Year)!
