Yesterday at recess, a group of 5th grade girls approached me. “HaMorah Michelle. We want to talk to you about something. Do you think you could help us make a student government with a class president and everything? We want to make a difference in our school!”
Ask and you shall receive! Students at MWJDS have the power to have their voices heard.
This morning, students came into homeroom to find the following message written on their white boards: “Interested in a student government? Join us at lunch for an open forum in HaMorah Michelle’s room.”
Lunch time rolled around and my room very quickly began to fill up. We had to bring in chairs from other rooms after it became standing room only. I was so impressed (impressed, but not surprised) by the number of students who chose to give up their lunch period to come together to discuss how they could make a difference in their school. They came up with some great ideas for what they envisioned the student government would be responsible for. They very democratically debated and voted on how the government would be structured, and how the various populations would be represented. After lunch, the halls were buzzing with excitement around the new student government. We’ll keep you posted on the progress of the new organization!
