Yesterday, in social studies, Tamar students wrote letters to veterans of the USA armed forces. In their letters, the children introduced themselves and expressed thanks for the service of our veterans. These letters will be passed along by Rabbi Bazer to service men and women. As you are probably aware, we are very lucky to have a connection to Rabbi (Colonel) Bazer, who is currently the Deputy Director of the Joint Chaplains Office of the National Guard serving in Washington D.C. We are planning a time, closer to Veteran’s Day, for the children to skype with Rabbi Bazer so that he can speak directly to our students about his work. We have encouraged the children to speak to family members who have served in the armed forces of the USA or Israel.
Tamar scientists have been learning to “sketch like scientists” rather than like artists. This week the children used magnifying glasses to examine and write about leaves from a scientific point of view. Their writing had to include accurate diagrams and labels.
Fundations lessons continue to center on mastering consonant digraphs. The children have been reading and writing words that begin and end with digraphs. In math, we have been focusing on addition word problems.
Tamar writers wrote about their Yom Kippur experiences this week. Children wrote about a variety of activities including blowing shofar, fasting and doing havdallah with glow sticks.
We are continuing our author study of Kevin Henkes. This week we read, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, Jessica and A Weekend With Wendell. The children have been making astute text-to-self and text-to-text connections with the books as well as identifying the characters and settings of the stories.
It was wonderful to be able to have outdoor recess again, although I have to say that the weather was not lovely. Nonetheless the children seemed to very much enjoy being outside again.
Next week will be a fun and busy week with our Sukkah hop field trip and our in-school Simchat Torah celebration.
Best wishes for a peaceful Shabbat and a joyous Sukkot. Joanne
