This week in Tamar we began our study of Kevin Henkes. The children heard his books: Wemberly Worried, Owen and Sheila Rae the Brave. Together we are making a large Kevin Henkes chart and recording the characters and setting for each book. In addition, we have been learning about text-to-self connections and text-to-text connections. Text-to-self connections are ways that children use their own experience and knowledge to make personal connections to a text. These personal connections help the children better understand the text. We will continue reading more of Kevin Henkes books over the next few weeks.
In math, we have been working on addition sentences for numbers 1-10. The children learned to count on from the greater number when adding two numbers. Today we learned about the commutative property of addition which teaches that you can add numbers in any order and get the same answer. This is important as children learn to add more than two numbers. We also began practicing addition stories or what in my day we called word problems. Ask your child about jumping the classroom number line to solve math problems.
In Fundations, we began learning some consonant digraphs, two consonants that come together to form one sound. The digraphs we are currently learning are: sh, ch, wh, ck and th. We just began reading and writing words with these digraphs.
In their journals today, the children wrote about what they do when they get home from school each day.
Shabbat Shalom and G’mar Chatimah Tova,
Best wishes for a peaceful Shabbat and a wonderful year ahead,
Joanne
