Books, books, books…what could be better than books! Many thanks to all the parents who helped complete our class wish list of books! Rimon students were very excited to see all the additions to our classroom library. We already have read some of them during our daily read-aloud time.
Rimon writers are very busy writing personal narrative, small moment stories. A small moment story is a story that zooms in on one tiny moment. For instance, a student would write about going on a ride at Disneyworld, rather than the whole trip to Disney. A personal Narrative is a story told in first person, a true account of something that he/she actually experienced. Topics chosen by Rimon writers include: playing a baseball game, making a stuffed reindeer, receiving a present from a friend, an airplane trip and a specific time playing with a pet dog. Each child is writing a few stories. Later in the unit, he/she will pick one story to edit and illustrate. The children will then have the opportunity to read their stories to another class.
In math, we have been busy comparing the numbers between 10 and 20. Math concepts that we have been exploring include: greater than, less than, least and greatest. This is partly a review of concepts we learned earlier this year but this time we are applying to larger numbers. The children also have been reviewing and growing their ability to complete both increasing and decreasing number patterns. They are also gaining a deeper understanding of place value in the ones, tens and even hundreds.
Fundations has centered around a group of glued sounds and the words ending in those sounds. These sounds include ing, ong, ung and ang and include words like ring, song, rung and rang. We will be focusing on a new set of glued sounds starting next week.
Chanukah is everywhere. The children have continued to learn the Chanukah blessings and many wonderful Chanukah songs. We played Chanukah bingo and decorated dreidels. The children are very excited about our party today. We talked about applying what we have learned about the mitzvah of Hachnassat Orchim, welcoming guests, when the special visitors from Shillman house join us today for our Chanukah celebration.
Chag Urim Sameach to you all, Hamorah Joanne
