Wow! It has been an exciting and full first week of school in first grade! We have been very busy exploring the classroom, practicing routines and beginning to get to know each other a bit.
First graders had fun exploring our math materials. Students used our pattern blocks and the tens cubes. They also played the “snake game,” an adding game with dice. Next week, we will begin our official math curriculum, Math in Focus.
Te’enah students also explored our classroom library. They learned the 5 finger rule for choosing “just right” books.
Children shared their hopes and dreams for this year. These included: learning to read harder books, getting better at drawing, playing board games, bringing pets to visit school and making sure to get to school on time.
We began a bit of a review for our phonics program Fundations. We will continue reviewing for the next couple of weeks and then move onto new material.
In science, the children began learning to look at the world through scientists’ eyes which are different from artists’ eyes. They practiced sketching like a scientist.
Jewish Living and Learning began this week as well. In the coming weeks, we will be focusing on the upcoming October holidays.
Shabbat Shalom,
Hamorah Joanne
