Te’enah students are learning stories about Abraham and Sarah in Tanakh. This week the children explored the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim, welcoming guests, as modeled by Abraham and Sarah when they welcomed the three angels. Hamorah Alli re-told the story and then had the children act it out, complete with props and costumes. It was a great way for them to integrate the story and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of the people from the torah.
Te’enah students completed their Kevin Henkes posters this week. Each child chose a favorite book for his/her poster. They each did a fabulous job of identifying the characters and settings of their book as well as writing about why they chose their books and making text to text and text to self connections. As a class, we composed a letter that we will be mailing to Mr. Henkes next week along with photos of their posters.
In math, we have continued our study of geometry, exploring plane and solid geometric shapes. In Fundations, the children completed a unit on the suffix “s.” Next week, we will begin a new unit, which focuses on additional glued sounds. In Writer’s Workshop and in our read-alouds, we are now exploring personal narratives. We began by reading some Caldicott Award Winners: Owl Moon and The Snowy Day. These are both personal narrative forms of writing. We are beginning a new social studies unit on civil rights and will be working on this in honor of the upcoming holiday, Martin Luther King Day, in January.
Have a wonderful and peaceful Shabbat,
Hamorah Joanne
