This week, we had two very important and equally beautiful milestone events.
Portfolio Day brought families, children, and staff together to review and celebrate student learning. Families sat together on blankets and chairs, closely together, with the child/ren leaning over the shoulders of the adults, sitting on their laps, or standing next to them, excitedly and proudly pointing out the finer details of the coursework and creations they were most proud to highlight. Parents smiled, siblings felt proud of one another, teachers and staff looked on with joy. And it was over 90 degrees, but fine in the shade.
The 8th grade graduation ceremony wove together the students’ personalities, staff commentary on each child, and families with extended families who could not make the in-person ceremony last week. So many people commented during and after how this culminating ceremony of middle school truly brings out the best in our students, staff, and school community as a whole.
Both events were inspiring. Both served to remind us of the precious children we have the honor and responsibility to serve well every day. It should not take such events to remind us of how important our daily efforts to teach and guide are, but they do help us focus in on what is most important.
Shabbat Shalom,
Brian Cohen, Head of School
