What could be more exciting than following the process of new life being born into the world? For the past month, Hamorah Sydney and Hamorah Rachel have led the kindergarteners through this adventure as the children checked the incubator daily, took notes on their observations, and counted down the days until hatching. This caught the attention of many others in the school as well, from all grades and adults, too. The anticipation in the school was palpable as everyone was asking how the eggs were doing and if the chicks had come out yet. On Monday, the first two chicks hatched, and when we all returned to school on Tuesday there was incredible energy in the air. “The chicks have hatched,” was the word in the hallways and throughout the building. Of course, the staff got to see them first, but our excitement was really around the moment the students arrived at school and got to see for themselves. And arrive they did. Students climbed the stairs at a quicker than normal pace and darted straight to the PK-K room to see for themselves, then moved on to their classrooms while spreading the word themselves, “They are sooo cuuuute!”
The birth of these wonderful little fluffy chicks is again a reminder of the resiliency of life, the onset of summer months, the amazing growth of our precious children, and the immeasurable fascination that we humans, both old and young, have with the nature that surrounds us. We just have to remember to keep our eyes open, which is best done by letting the children lead the way with their natural curiosity and amazement.
