Chalav students have been learning about Tu B’shvat. The children each wrote and illustrated an acrostic poem about the holiday. We will be publishing a book with all of our poems at the beginning of next week. Keep your eyes open for a copy of it coming your way soon!
Geometry continues to be the focus of our math curriculum. Chalav students made a variety of shapes with geo-boards this week.
They also built shape rockets. These rockets were part of a math challenge. The children were each given a square piece of paper. They had to cut the paper into four shapes and make a copy of a rocket. They had to use all of the square in their rocket and had to make it the same size as a model rocket. Initially, some of the children said that they could not complete the challenge but with time and help from their friends, everyone succeeded in making the rocket!
In Fundations, we continue to work on glued sounds. This week we added some new glued sounds to our list. So all together we have learned/are learning the following glued sounds: all, am, an, ing, ang, ong, ung, onk, ank, ink and unk. Students went on a word hunt to find glued sounds around the classroom. They then shared their lists with each other.
In exciting news, Chalav students earned the most middah points in the lower school last month for being Rodef Shalom, seekers of peace. We will be getting extra recess time one day next week. In addition, those reading minutes keep adding up. The children have earned another reading party which will be held next week as well.
Finally, every Friday we spend a few minutes cleaning up our classroom. This is an important part of learning to take care of our surroundings. Children help by sharpening pencils (always a very coveted job), washing tables and giving out Friday folders.
Shabbat Shalom, Hamorah Joanne
