It has been another full and exciting week in Chalav. We have continued to read Kevin Henkes books during our read aloud time. Together we have made a large chart listing the name of each book and the characters and settings for that book. Children also have been making text-to-self and text-to-text connections with these books.
In Reader’s Workshop, children have learned the importance of a doing a “stop and think.” When we read, we take an active role in using our schema to ask questions, summarize the story and make connections to what we are reading.
Chalav students have now completed the second unit of our Fundations program. Next week we will begin to learn to read and write digraphs. If you are not familiar with the term digraph, please ask your son or daughter to tell you about them (but please wait until next week).
First grade mathematicians have been busy learning sums to 8 and 9 and beginning to think more about subtraction. During morning meeting, we have been greeting each other and using the dice to form addition and subtraction sentences as part of our greeting.
As always, children have been busy enjoying play during indoor and outdoor recess. Play is an essential part of every first graders development-a chance to be creative and an opportunity to grow socially and emotionally. We have been fortunate so have some beautiful fall weather to enjoy.
Best wishes for a peaceful and fulfilling Shabbat,
Hamorah Joanne
