This week in D’vash we continued our word study of short vowels and digraphs. The children became vowel detectives finding words with digraphs and short vowels throughout the classroom. We listened for digraphs at the beginning and ending of words and found a number of them embedded in the words we use every day as part of our daily schedule.
We read the book by Kevin Henkes called My Garden. In that book, a little girl imagines what she might plant if she could plant absolutely anything in her garden and it would grow. The D’vash children imagined what they would plant too. Their ideas included dessert trees, dogs, people, clouds and love.
We began preparing for the final project in our study of Kevin Henkes and his books. Each child has chosen a book and next week will begin work on a poster about the book. The children already have identified the characters and setting in their chosen book. We are planning to send pictures of the finished posters as part of a birthday card to Mr. Henkes later this month. His birthday is November 27!
D’vash mathematicians have been busy jumping the number line and making both addition and subtraction sentences on it. Our estimation jar this week had 121 pennies in it. We counted them together by 2s.
In science we spoke about how we can tell if something is alive. Ideas included the fact that things that are alive grow and move by themselves. Things that are not alive do not grow, do not need food or water and only moved if they are moved by another force.
