After an in depth study of the Massachusetts midterm election ballot questions, 5th grade students decided to create their own MWJDS election to give fellow students a voice an sense of empowerment around issues that could be universally related to in grades prek-8. Students created 3 ballot questions and an accompanying ballot guide to distribute in advance to students.
This helped the constituents decide what in advance how they’d be voting and even campaign for the issues that mattered most to them.
Voting officials gave clear instructions to voters and upheld an organized and fair election process. Every detail from creation of the documents to registration to ballot distribution and collection was handled by a member of the Dvash class. They will also be counting ballots and releasing results later today.
There were even “I voted” stickers at the end so students could display their civic pride!
