Te’enah scientists began some sand experiments this week as part of our study of rocks and minerals. The children analyzed the components of sand and what changes when sand is mixed with water. Like other scientists, we formulated hypotheses prior to our experiments.
In Jewish Living and Learning and in Social Studies, we continued our study of civil rights and of “upstanders.” We learned more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his fight for civil rights. We also read about Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, his experiences with discrimination as a Jew in Poland and his friendship with and support for Dr. King. Last but not least, Hamorah Alli taught everyone about Bella Abzug, a lawyer, congresswoman and strong voice for civil rights and the rights of women.
In math, we continue to learn strategies for adding and subtracting larger numbers. We have been focusing on doubles and on grouping items in 10s to help make it easier to add and subtract larger numbers.
Te’enah students have been learning about consonant blends in Fundations. The children are learning to read and write words with blends. Some blends appear at the beginning of words while others are found at the end or even in the middle of words.
This week in Readers’ Workshop, we began reading groups. Our read-alouds have helped us better understand how readers sometimes use their schema to infer information from their reading. This is important since books don’t always answer all of our questions or wonderings. Learning how to ask great questions is also a skill that we have been building.
We had our mission mitzvah party to celebrate all the kindness and learning that goes on in our classroom!
I hear that there is a lot of great reading going on for homework and cannot wait to see those reading logs next week.
Shabbat Shalom,
Hamorah Joanne
