Chalav students have been concentrating on learning subtraction facts this week. We have jumped backwards on the number line and been making subtraction sentences all week. We have a fabulous group of budding mathematicians in Chalav!
We have continued to read books by Kevin Henkes. Here is the poster that we made together as a class.
For each book we have read, we have identified the characters and the setting. We also have made text-to-self and text-to-text connections. Next week, each student will pick a favorite Kevin Henkes book and use it as the basis of an individual poster.
In Fundations, we have begun to learn about digraphs. Digraphs are letter combinations that together make one sound. Digraphs we have been learning include: sh, th, wh, ch and ck. We will be working on digraphs for the next couple of weeks, practicing writing and reading words with digraphs in them.
Tefillah has focused on Birchot HaShachar. Each child in Chalav worked with a partner in either second or third grade to create a picture illustrating one of the blessings. Please take a look at the pictures when you come in for conferences next week.
Our week ended with a wonderful day doing tefillah and singing with Pizmon. We are so very excited to be hosting Pizmon! Pizmon, the Jewish a capplla group from Columbia, JTS and Barnard, joined our school today to teach us some new music and to sing for us. Everyone, teachers and children alike, were thrilled to have them here.
