Te’enah mathematicians began a new unit on measurement this week. They enjoyed lining up shortest tallest student for our very first lesson.
This week we have been using non-standard units to measure. These non-standard units have included Popsicle sticks, cubes and squares on a grid. Next week we will move on to measuring items in inches and feet.
Te’enah students love writing in their journals. The children are writing very imaginative stories, incorporating the phonics rules we are learning in class.
In Fundations, we continue our study of “bossy r” words but have moved on to add vowel teams. So far, we have worked on these vowel teams: ay (play), ai (bait), ee (jeep), ea (eat) and ey (key). Children learned the saying: “If two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking” to help them remember the rule that it is the first vowel we hear in the vowel team.
Te’enah students wrote fabulous Tu B’shvat poems. They will read their poems next week at Kabbalat Shabbat. Their poems also will be on display at the Tu B’shvat Seder at Temple Israel next week.
Reading groups continue in Reader’s Workshop. Students are reading in small groups to help build decoding and reading comprehension skills.
We have completed our study of civil rights in social studies and have begun a unit on immigration. Not surprisingly we quickly realized that we are all immigrants, if not directly, then we each have parents or grandparents who immigrated to the United States.
Shabbat Shalom,
