We learned about a very special person, Martin Luther King Jr., this week. We talked about how this great leader believed that people can solve problems without fighting and by using their words. After learning about the amazing ways he helped our country, we read “Martin’s Big Words,” by Doreen Rappaport and Bryan Collier. We heard parts of his speech and then shared what kinds of dreams we have for the world. We created beautiful depictions to show what we thought of when we heard about MLK and what he did for our country.
“I chose to make Martin Luther King Junior’s face. That’s because I want to remember him and never forget about him. If I forget I might not remember about those silly, mean rules that used to be around. If I forget that might happen again. It’s important to keep the laws fair.” –Raphael
“Here is Martin Luther King Junior. He is saying his speech and again here. Everyone is singing, dancing, and praying. They’re praying to make the black people sit wherever they want. Here is the person who killed Martin Luther Junior. All the parts are surrounded by a ‘surrounder’ to show the different parts of my picture.” –Velvel
“My picture is about the “I have a Dream” speech. So I added little black boys and little white girls holding hands together. I made them all around the world because the whole world needs to do this. And I added the words “I have a dream” because that’s what the picture is all about, just like Martin Luther King said.”-Elias
