Te’enah students have completed their study of sand and rocks. The children especially enjoyed the culmination of our unit when we made three kinds of rock, sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic out of three kinds of chocolate. It was a yummy science experiment!
In math, we completed a unit on weight and will begin a new unit on graphing. The children will learn how to read and create picture graphs and bar graphs. The children also finished a mid-year assessment in math. It is hard to believe that the school year is more than half complete at this point.
Te’enah writers wrote acrostic poems about spring. This month our focus in literacy is on poetry. The children have been listening to a variety of poems and have been illustrating poems as well during our morning work time. Te’enah students seem to especially enjoy hearing Jack Prelutsky’s silly poems on a variety of topics. This is in preparation for April which is National Poetry Month.
Purim is only a week away. We have been reading stories about Purim and learning about the mitzvot of Purim. Did you know that there are four mitzvot that we are supposed to fulfill on Purim itself? These are: hearing the megillah, having a festive meal, giving mishloach manot to our friends and neighbors and giving tzedakkah. The children are very excited about our upcoming Purim carnival and the chance to wear costumes to school next Friday.
In Tanakh, first graders enjoyed acting out the story of Jacob meeting and eventually marrying both Leah and Rachel. We have some wonderful budding actors in our classroom!
We are still in need of drivers for our trip to the matzah factory at the end of the month. Please let us know if you can help with this. Shabbat Shalom, Hamorah Joanne
