This Shabbat is Shabbat Zachor, the Sabbath of Remembrance, which always precedes the holiday of Purim. It is a time to remind ourselves of the baseless hatred, the prejudice and oppression that have characterized much of our history as a people, and which unfortunately appear on the rise again. It is also a time, though, to remember that we have power, both individually and collectively, to turn the tides of hatred to ones of acceptance and love. With
those thoughts in mind, I offer the following prayer/meditation. Please feel free to use it in your congregations if you wish, perhaps starting with the singing of Mi Haish (from Psalm 34).

Prayer for Peace
Scripture asks, “What type of person is a life-seeker? The one who desires to see good throughout his or her days. Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking falsehood. Turn aside the evil of life; rather do good, seeking peace and pursuing it.”
As we gather this weekend for prayer and communion, with God and with one another, may we strive to keep in mind that which is good and that which brings us peace and wholeness. May we remember that peace does not come easily, that desiring it is only the first step. Each of us individually and all of us collectively must pursue the vision of peace with our hearts and minds focused on its attainment. In the dark times and in the light, may we draw strength from one another and from the One Whose gift of life unites us in holy purpose. Amen
