This week in Tamar, the children completed their All About Me books. The books are adorable and will be included in the children’s portfolios.
Next week we will begin our author study of Kevin Henkes, the author of Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried and Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse among many other wonderfully creative books.
In math, we finished our initial study of number bonds. Next week, we will move on to Chapter 3 in our math books, focusing on addition facts for the numbers 1-10.
Science focused on learning about the scientific method. We were learning about the steps scientists use the explore the world. These steps include: observation, questioning, forming hypotheses, experimentation and making conclusions. This week’s lesson centered on the first of these steps: observation, questioning and forming hypotheses. The children had some hands-on time with magnets. Then as a group, they shared their observations, formulated questions and then together we formulated a couple of hypotheses. In our next few science classes, we will be focusing on how scientists carefully record their observations.
Tamar students began learning about the upcoming Veteran’s Day holiday in social studies. We read a book by Jill Biden called Don’t Forget God Bless Our Troops. The book is told from the perspective of Jill and Joe Biden’s young granddaughter, Natalie, and her experiences as the young daughter of a solider who is often away in the army. Over the next couple of social studies classes, we will be learning more about Veteran’s and writing letters to be sent to soldiers in the service.
Tamar students have been working hard in Fundations, writing short CVC words and sentences. Next week, we will move on to begin to learn consonant digraphs, two letters that combine to make one sound. For instance, the letters sh, wh, th and more.
Tamar readers have been practicing decoding unknown words and then re-reading the whole sentence or phrase more smoothly. In our read-alouds this week, the children heard the Rosh Hashanah books: Gershon’s Monster, New Years at the Pier and Even Higher. Today the children attended an apple tasting in the kindergarten room. In Jewish Living and Learning, we began learning about sukkot and the children had fun designing their own mini-sukkot out of Legos, wooden blocks and Magna Tiles.
Best wishes for a peaceful Shabbat and a happy and healthy new year.
