After reading an article about Sesame Street’s newest puppet, Julia, who has autism, fifth and sixth graders imagined the puppets they would like to create and put on Sesame Street.
If I could create a puppet and put her in Sesame Street I would name her Lizzy. Lizzy would have cancer and she would be bald. She would also really like to draw and do a lot of art. I would have her be bald and also have her have cancer because I think that it is important to raise awareness for cancer. Some people that have cancer are bald because of a certain treatment they need to have, but that should not matter. She would be super sweet and welcoming to everyone and want to meet and be friends with anybody. She would be really friendly and she would care about everyone. Her favorite colors would be pink and purple and she would like to wear a lot of pink and purple clothing. She would also like to play sports and wear skirts, t-shirts, and shorts when it is sunny. -Ella
My puppet would be an orangutan that would raise awareness about how animals are becoming extinct. His name would be Irven. He would wear a veterinarian coat and he would bring some endangered animals to show the audience what they can do to help change that, like not littering or throwing bottles and trash in the ocean. Not throwing trash in the ocean can help endangered animals in the ocean and birds because some birds go in the water to get food. His personality would be happy and energetic. Irven would tell people about endangered animals because he would be one himself. -Aiden
My puppet would be a blue superhero that raises awareness for Why Not Devon?. He would be flying through Sesame Street and teaching the gang about Devon and the kind of tumor he has. He would be dressed in green because green is Devon’s favorite color, and he would have #whynotdevon on his cape. He would also have brown hair with green socks and black shoes. -Zach
If I could create a puppet to join the Sesame Street cast, I would create an African American puppet. I would make it African American because sometimes when there is an African American person, people treat them differently. I want to raise awareness for this topic because African American people are normal people, just with different-colored skin. My puppet’s name would be Amanda. My puppet would be happy unless someone is mean to her because of her skin color. My puppet’s skin color would be brown but not too dark and my puppet’s hair would be straight with a little wave and really dark brown. -Dafna
If I were to add a character to Sesame Street to raise awareness about a group of people, I would add an immigrant muppet who has just moved to America. I would add this character because it would raise awareness for immigrants who are new in the area and are having a hard time making friends. The puppet could be from a non-English speaking country and needed to learn English, the main language in the United States. Others could have been learning English their entire lives and are just getting used to the American customs that might be different from customs in their original countries. For example, someone from Russia could have an accent that others can’t understand well or only know a little English. This character would be friendly and the other Sesame Street characters would try to understand them when they were talking or acting differently than the other puppets they were accustomed to in America. It is important to raise awareness for immigrants because they need extra help when it comes to moving, especially when they are moving from somewhere far away and are missing their homeland. -EmmaChaya
My character would be a kid with nonfunctional body parts. I would make this character because some kids body parts don’t work. His name would be Robbie. He would have short brown hair, big green eyes, and he would be short. Robbie would like to play with his friends a lot but sometimes he wouldn’t be able to do everything his friends could do. Then he would start feeling sad. -Justin
