Te’enah students exhibited their “Growing Things” work at the science fair this morning. During our unit, the children learned about various kinds of seeds. We examined the insides of the seeds and learned about the different parts of the seed: the seed coat, the cotyledon ( the food storage) and the embryo (the baby plant inside the seed). We even saw the embryos inside the been seeds. We germinated three kinds of bean seeds and planted them. We also took apart some fruit, counted and examined the seeds. We learned that some items like cucumbers and peppers are not really vegetables but are fruits with seeds like other fruits.
In math, we have moved on to addition and subtraction with numbers from 1-40. The children have been practicing addition of these bigger numbers with and without re-grouping. Next week we will move on to learning subtraction without re-grouping.
We have been working on making our poetry books for publishing. The children finished the final copies of their first poems. Happily, we were able to get an extension from our “publisher” (Scholastic) and will have time for each child to complete at least one more poem to add to our book. Thank you to all of you who got in your order forms so promptly.
The children are working hard to prepare for our upcoming milestone event, the Siddur ceremony, on May 15th.
Shabbat Shalom,
Joanne
