Te’enah students have been learning about number bonds in math. Children have been practicing making different combinations to reach the numbers 1-12. We have been using connecting cubes and a balance to help us compose and decompose these numbers.
In science, together with second grade, we began our study of the phases of the moon. We learned that there are 8 phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent. We know that the Jewish calendar is based on the moon and that Rosh Hashanna will come at the time of the next new moon.
In Jewish Living and Learning, Te’enah students were asked to think about something kind or helpful that they will try to do next year. Then they had to write about what they will do next year. These included: helping moms to cook, getting a pet dog and walking it and helping parents without even being asked to help. In tanakh we continue our work on the creation story.
Te’enah writers have been very busy working on their “All About Me” books. Some pages they have been writing include topics such as: my favorite game is…; my favorite book is…; in my free time, I like to… and others.
In Readers’ Workshop, the children have been busy reading (of course) and learning strategies to help when they come to a word that they cannot read. They can tap it out using what we have learned in Fundations. However, it that doesn’t help there are other possible strategies. For instance, using the first and last letters of an unknown word in combination with the picture and/or the rest of the sentence.
In Fundations, we completed our review focusing on letter sounds and writing the lower case letters. We are working on tapping out and writing CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with short vowels.
Have a great Shabbat,
Hamorah Joanne
