Te’enah students have been busy exploring numerical patterns in math. We have been learning about growing or increasing patterns as well as decreasing patterns. The children have been using towers of counting cubes to show different kinds of mathematical patterns. In addition, we have been reviewing the concepts and symbols for greater than and less than as part of our unit on comparing numbers. Our next unit will focus on number bonds.
In Fundations, we have completed our review of writing the lower case letters. The children will continue to practice correct formation of these letters as we move forward in the Fundations program.
In Writers’ Workshop, the children have begun to write their “All About Me” books. This week Te’enah students looked at each others’ baby pictures, shared the stories about the origins of their names and made pictures of their family members. The children have begun to realize that they each have a unique story to tell.
In Tanakh, we continue to explore the creation story. In Jewish Living and Learning last week, children got a chance to try out my shofar. This week, we read the story, The Hardest Word about the Ziz who learns that the hardest word is “sorry.” We talked about the concept of teshuvah, saying sorry and doing what we can to make up for hurtful things we have done. The children are trying to be bucket fillers not bucket dippers (ie being kind to each other) this year.
Te’enah students got together with the children in second grade to learn about what scientists do-what makes someone a scientist. We also began a social studies unit on elections. We heard the story: Duck for President and then held our own classroom vote for Duck or Farmer Brown. Not surprisingly, Duck won.
Have a wonderful Shabbat, Hamorah Joanne
