6th and 7th grade students embarked on an exciting engineering challenge today in homeroom as they worked together to make and race zucchini racers. They were given paper, tape, 4 nails, 2 paperclips, 2 bamboo skewers, 2 thumbtacks, a plastic spoon, a plastic knife, 4 wheels, and a paper plate. With these supplies and the most aerodynamic zucchini they could find at the grocery store, student pairs competed to make an aesthetically pleasing car that would travel the farthest distance down a ramp without being pushed. Congrats to Brett and Justin for creating the zucchini car that traveled the farthest (by a long shot) and to Ella and Gigi who created the zucchini car voted to be the most aesthetically pleasing!

Maybe this is why, of all the rituals of the holy temple, this one has been revived and reimagined in so many ways. It has made its way into our prayer service, as a way for the kohanim or the leaders to bless the whole community, wherever we live. It has entered our homes as a blessing given lovingly from parents to children each Friday night. It has entered many of our rituals of transition as a blessing for a new stage of life or a new endeavor. Last week at our school’s graduation, a selection of students formed a choir to offer this blessing to our graduates as they set off on the next stage of their educational journey.
