Last week Rimon students joined the rest of the school in making challah for Rosh Hashanah. The children enjoyed a unique way of adding the ingredients and mixing the dough in giant plastic bags rather than the more conventional bowls. The next day the students were each able to form their own challah to take home. Reports were that the challot were delicious!
We have been taking advantage of the warm weather to spend recess time outside. A highlight of our recent outdoor recess time was some time riding the school bikes. Indoor recess has been full of classroom exploration as well.
In Science we have been learning about the sun and the solar system. The children made their own drawings of our planets.
Rimon writers have been busy working on their “All About Me” books. Our writing lessons have focused on the important skills of adding finger spaces between words, making sure the first word of each sentence begins with an upper case letter and that each sentence ends with a period. The children have enjoyed writing about such things as their favorite games, books and animals.
The children have been busy building their reading and writing muscles in other ways as well. We completed our review of how to write the lower case letters. The children have been working on tapping out and accurately reading and spelling CVS words (consonant vowel consonant words). At the end of this week, we have begun working on writing short sentences of CVC words with correct spelling and punctuation.
Rimon readers learned about the importance of doing a “Stop and Think” while reading. As readers, it is crucial not only to be able to decode the words we read but also to stop and think, asking ourselves questions such as: Do I understand what just happened in the story? What do I think will happen next?
We have spent much time talking about Yom Kippur and the need for all of us to do teshuvah, trying to be better people in the coming year.
Best wishes for a g’mar tov! May you be sealed in for a year of health and happiness.
