It was wonderful to see so many of you for Back To School Night! Rimon students were so happy to receive notes from their families at school this morning.
In our phonics program, Fundations, we have been busy reviewing the formation of the lowercase letters. We are about halfway through our review. In addition to letter formation, the children have been working on tapping out the sounds in some basic CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. After tapping out a word, Rimon students then go on to writing these words with the correct spelling.
Rimon students have begun work on their “All About Me” books. They have been busy making self-portraits and drawing their families. In their journals, the children have been writing about highlights of the summer and the beginning of school.
September is a month full of birthdays. This year we are celebrating birthdays together with second grade. When a child has a birthday, we create a list of things that we know about that child. This is our schema about that particular child. Then each student makes a picture and writes a birthday wish based on the birthday child’s schema. The concept of schema, what we know, is a concept that we will use as both readers and writers this year.
In Jewish Studies, the children have continued to learn about Rosh Hashanah. They have learned more about the shofar after a special learning session with Rav Chazzan. Students also made new year’s cards for their families.
Yesterday the children had a chance to look closely at the inside of our school torah. They saw the Hebrew letters, written without vowels, and got to hold the special torah belt and a piece of parchment. Rimon students also saw a video about a sofer stam, a scribe who actually writes the torah with a feather pen and special ink.
Rimon scientists began learning about our solar system. We read a book about the sun and the stars and saw a video about the planets.
In math, we have been exploring the terms: greater than, less than and equal to. The children also have been making increasing and decreasing number patterns. We continue to work on correct number formation as well.
Have a wonderful Shabbat! Hamorah Joanne
