Rimon students had a fabulous time today picking apples and pumpkins and playing on the playground at Tougas Farm. The weather was “picture perfect” and we were very lucky to have the farm entirely to ourselves, that is together with all the other MWJDS students and faculty. Our day at the farm began with a quick snack. This was followed by a hayride around the farm and then a drop-off at the apple orchard. The children had their choice of different varieties of apples including Empire, Golden Delicious, Gala and Crimson Crisps. Each child was allowed to pick 6 apples, 5 to take home and one to eat in the orchard. We then moved on to the pumpkin patch and were each able to choose one pumpkin. We were lucky to have two members of the Tougas family to teach us a bit about how apples and pumpkins are grown. We learned that pumpkins grow from the female flowers of the plant and that apple trees require cross pollination to grow and produce apples. We heard about the bad hail storm that happened at the orchard earlier this year and saw for ourselves how crops can be damaged by bad weather. Happily despite the storm, there were many delicious apples left for us to pick.
Another highlight of the day was visiting the goats.
Wishing you all happy eating! Hamorah Joanne
