This week, during Fundations, Te’enah children went on a classroom “hunt” for words ending in glued sounds (ie. ink, unk, onk, ank, ing, ong, ang or ung).
Te’enah and Chalav students together have begun a social studies unit on civil rights. We started our unit by learning about Ruby Bridges, who as a six year old little girl helped to begin the process of integrating the public schools in New Orleans, Louisiana. We watched a movie about her story and then saw a video of her as an adult looking back on her childhood experiences.
Another model of an “upstander” we have been studying is Abraham Aveenu. The Torah tells us that Abraham had the courage to argue with God, urging God not to hurt any righteous people in Sodom and G’morrah. The children made pictures of ways they can be “upstanders” in the world.
We also have been working on learning the Chanukkah candle blessings in preparation for the first night of Chanukkah this coming Saturday.
Best wishes for a Happy Chanukkah and a healthy and happy New Year!!!
