This week in Te’enah we began a new unit on geometry. The children are learning about plane (flat) shapes as well as solid or 3 dimensional shapes. The solid shapes that we are focusing on include: spheres, rectangular prisms, cubes, cones, pyramids and cylinders. Today the children used plane shapes to make pictures and solid shapes to build models.
In Writer’s Workshop, the children have each selected their favorite Kevin Henkes book and have begun work on a poster about that book. The posters include a list of the characters and the settings in the book. In addition, the children have to state a reason that they like the book and make both a text to text and a text to self connection with their chosen book.
Our new science unit focuses on the study of rocks and minerals. We began by having the children collect their own rocks. They will be working to classify these rocks into one of three types: sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic. Our budding geologist were all excited about this new venture into the world of earth science.
One one of our rainy days, Te’enah students had fun building cup structures in the classroom. One of our Atid students was on hadn to help. We are lucky to have a number of volunteers in our classroom.
