5th grade students were studying immigration and labor reform in an integrated English, Social Studies, and Judaic Studies unit. To culminate their studies this year, they planned a trip to New York City. On the first day, they spent some time with their 8th grade friends. They had lunch together at Ben’s Kosher Deli. They then did a mini walking tour of the Lower East Side before heading to the Tenement Museum where they learned about Jewish immigrant families and sweatshop labor. 5th graders said goodbye to their 8th grade friends and headed off to eat a delicious dinner in the caves at Cafe Archetypus, then headed back to their hotel room for a joint birthday party for 3 students. The next morning, 5th grade students boarded a ferry and headed to Ellis Island where they got a ranger guided tour of what it would be like to come through Ellis Island. Lastly, they had a picnic lunch with Lady Liberty prior to heading home. Students had a great time and learned so much! What was the most common question after the trip? Where are we going next? 🙂
